Career Over for Thompson

In some disappointing and sad news out of South Carolina headquarters, it was announced today that the career of P Reginald Thompson (AA), 23 years old, has ended.

On August 23rd, Thompson went onto the DL with severe shoulder inflammation.  Team doctor's and trainer's knew the nature of the injury was serious from the onset, but all indications were that Thompson would be ready for Opening Day.  But while Thompson's rehab was going exceptionally well until last week.  The turn went from good to bad almost instantaneously.  High ranking team officials were informed last week of the developments hoping a week of rest would benefit Reggie.

Thompson was quoted as saying, "It was totally unexpected, which makes it a little bit harder to deal with."

Thompson, drafted in the 4th Round of the 2012 entry draft (#75 overall) was expected to via for a bullpen role in the 2015 season and the thought process with ownership was to eventually be converted into a starting pitcher.  Thompson topped out on the radar gun at 97 MPH, had tremendous stuff, movement and control with two plus pitches (cutter & slider).

Upon signing his contract, Thompson was placed in AA where he struggled a bit.  He was moved to A ball and pitched and started in 19 games, throwing 111 innings, striking out 99 and having a WHIP of 1.24.

On August 1st, just 3 weeks before his injury, Thompson was awarded the Buck O'Neil Pitcher of the Month Award going 5-1, 1.26 ERA, over 7 games and starts.  He threw 43 innings, striking out 37 and having a WHIP of 0.93

He was brought back to AA on August 23rd, for what would be his final start.  He took the loss going 4 innings, giving up 6 H, 1 R (earned), walking 0 and striking out 5.

CASAS Grabs Gold Glove

There weren't many highlights for the Bombers this past season, but the future is looking fairly bright and many believe the gap is narrowing between the Maple Marauders and the South Carolina nine.

Angelo Casas captures his first ABL Gold Glove at shortstop, in his rookie season no less.  Casas made just 3 errors in over 1000 innings in the field.  Sabermaticians will note that he had a Range Factor of 4.97, an  astonishing Zone Rating of +14.1 runs and a Defense Efficiency of 1.058 (leading the league in the latter two).  Casas also had a fielding percentage of .998, good for 2nd at the position in the TML.

Casas will need to improve on his hitting as in 409 AB's for the big club, he had an average of .183

GM Altman was quoted "We, as an organization, knew Casas wasn't ready as a hitter yet on this level, but we knew he could field with the best of them.  He just turned 23 and has some time to improve his offense.  But the foundation of this team is pitching, and we're looking to solidify that with exceptional defense.  Casas has a chance to win a dozen of these Gold Gloves with the us before his career is over!"

Rick Grant wins the Gold Glove for AA (Ford Frick League) for 2B.  The 19 year old Grant had an exceptional season in the field, committing just 8 errors all season at second base in 142 games.  His Zone Rating was a +2.4, had an Exceptional Defense Efficiency Rating of 1.008, and his Range Factor of 5.04 runs was more than adequate.

Grant batted .257, an OB of .329, with 2 HR, 37 RBI and 47 SB's in 2013.  For his minor league career, Grant is sitting at 77.

If Grant's progress continues on pace, will be in the ABL at 21 years old, and will man the middle of the infield with Casas for many years.

Juan Marin Traded to So Cal

General Manager Gary Altman, and manager Tom Ritchie attended the press conference confirming that CF'er Juan Marin has been traded, pending physicals.

Altman stated that in return for the 34 year old veteran who played in 159 games in 2013, hitting .285 with 16 HR and 71 RBI's.

In return for Marin, the Bombers received SS Ben Kessler and SP Jeremy Fisher.

The question posed to Altman was by Dickie Dunn, and his question was "Is this a salary dump?".
Altman - I can see where you can assume that.  Marin is due to make 13.5 M in 2014 and 2015.  While we here in South Carolina feel that Marin will be productive and re energized on the west coast.  Also, where as we were very happy with Marin's production with the organization, we didn't see the ROI.  To be the highest paid Bomber and be fifth in HR, 3rd in RBI and AVG and batting 6th in the lineup, we felt it prudent to move Marin at this time.

Dunn - What's the story with Fisher?  He's on the DL right now.
GM - Fisher is a hard throwing left handed pitcher.  He started his career at 18 years old and went 18-4  with a 2.02 ERA.  The injury Fisher suffered was a torn triceps and is not only anticipated to fully recover, but be recovered in time for the start of the season.  Before his injury, Fisher was at 12-5 and 1.48 ERA and he was only 19.  He'll be starting the season the 2014 season in AA, and would not be surprised to see him pitch with the Bombers in late 2015, or 2016.  We're very high on him and felt that he offers us something for moving a quality man like Marin.

Dunn followed up with how will man the cavernous South Carolina CF and where will he bat?
GM - Well, we are really happy with the development of CF'er Martin Evans.  An 82nd overall selection in the inaugural draft.  Evans has really found himself.  In 2012, at AAA, he hit 314, 403 OB, 1 HR, and 19 SB.  His 2013 campaign, at 24 years old he took a big step up.  In 141 games, he hit .333, 442 OB, 3 HR and 45 SB.  2013 saw Evans be selected to the AAA All Star Game.
Ritchie - Evans, I feel, is ready now, and is a gold glove caliber center fielder.  He'll hit bounce between 1st, 8th and 9th in the order.  Our long range goal is to have him bat lead off, but we won't to take as much pressure off the kid as possible.

Dunn asked about resigning Alfonso, and if not who would play RF.
GM - Alfonso situation is interesting.  We'd love to keep him here, but he'll be 39 or 40 next season.  Not quite the direction we're looking to spend money on either.  We received our message about our budget loud and clear from the owner, and there's no help coming.  We have to control our destiny.    We've removed over 9 million this season and we're looking to save another 5 or so.  We're also planning on cutting another 20 million off of next season's payroll.

MGR - As for RF Brant Lee and Mark Buchanan will likely man the position.  They offer two different perspectives and game sets and makes us a different team depending who's in the lineup.  Buchanan, 24, will be given every opportunity to make the squad out of spring training against RHP.
Overall, at AAA, Buchanan hit 287, 397 OB with 18 HR, 82 RBI in 125 games.  But against RHP, Buchanan went 297, 414 OB, 495 SLG, 16 HR, 67 RBI in 327 AB.
Lee, 27 can run.  His bat needs to come around if he'd like to make the squad out of training camp, but he has stolen 71 bases in his minor league career.  Factor that speed with some power and you have a very intriguing asset.  Lee was a 20-20 man in AA this year, and that was missing about 5 weeks while in AAA.

Long Term Deals Reached, Owner Blasts Fans

The Bombers are committed to their players and the city of Columbia, South Carolina, and showed this by locking up a pair of the Young Guns to long term deals.

Dave Nicholson, 26, was signed to a 5 year, $8 Million dollar contract
Rodgers, 26, was signed to a 6 year, $11 Million dollar contract.

These two signings, along with the signing of Stephen Jackson last year keeps three young home grown talented pieces of the Bomber roster together thru at least the 2018 season.

On a side note, the South Carolina budget went up by just $500,000.  GM Altman, showed obvious signs of displeasure based on some of the holes in the lineup.  However, in a mutual press conference with the the GM and Owner, the owner hinted at a possible relocation in the Bombers future.  When pressed for more specific reasons, the Owner's response was this, "We brought in Alfonso with the expectation of increasing fan interest and excitement about the team, as well as winning more games.

"We also won 8 more games than our inaugural season, we did see attendance rise to over 3,000,000 fans, and exceeded the pundits best guesses of what our record would be at the end of the season.  We've exceed these expectations two years running.

"We also have developed 3 very good young players that will be with us for a very long time.  Our pitching staff is maturing, our hitters are getting better.  We moved up in the standings.

"Now for the things we can't understand.  While I noted our attendance is up, we are still at the bottom of attendance in the league.  Our budget, based on finances are last in the league, and the only one that is under $100M, but our payroll is 14th.  We're doing more with less, but there are limits.  Fan interest is at a league low of 57.  I know I care, I know Altman cares.  I know Ritchie cares.  I know the players care.  Why do the fans NOT care?"

When pressed for what the plans are for this season, in regards to the ballpark, "we're undecided on moving the fences in or adding seats.  We might just stand pat and put the capital money away to see what transpires."

One thing is apparent, if fan support remains at the level it's at now, South Carolina will not have an ABL franchise much longer.

August 2013 in Bomber Land

Thru August 29.....

Well, is the glass half full or half empty here in South Carolina.
If you consider fan interest, down to 58, half empty.
If you consider attendance, up 24% and projected to out draw last season on September 3rd, then half full.
If you consider the playoffs half full, then our glass is half empty here.
If you consider the quality of the SP the Bombers will roll out next season, then the glass is half full.
If you consider that the Bombers have never had a winning month, then it's half empty. (Needs to be checked via the almanac)
If you consider that the Bombers are playing 7 games better than the pundits predicted (59-75 vs 52-82 predicted), then it's half full.
If you compare last season's avg (.246) to this season's (.255), put a check mark in the half full column.
If you compare last season's ERA (5.50) to this season's (4.83) that would be another half full mark.
South Carolina's AAA affiliate, Bronx Bombers, finishing in 3rd place last season, 2 games under 500, and 19 back are doing immensely better.  Right now they again sit in 3rd place, but just 2.5 games back and are playing to a 71-62 record.  They've also been in 1st place for a majority of the season until players were summoned to the big club to help there.

On August 19th, Bomber Stephen "Action" Jackson was named the Thurman Munson League's Player of the Week.  He hit a robust .538 going 14 for 26, 2 HR's and just 3 RBI's (he bats 1st or 2nd in this lineup).  This is the second time Jackson has been honored (last time, August 13, 2012).  Apparently, the second week in August is Jackson's week!

On August 5th, AAA Bronx Bomber Mark Buchanan was honored as the Blake Camden League Player of the Week.  The 23 year old junior bomber hit .444 with 3 bombs and 11 RBI's.  Buchanan, the 26th player taken in the inaugural draft will be in the running for the vacancy created when RF aging superstar Francisco Alfonso departs at the end of the season via Free Agency.

The Bomber Beat continues...

On the 1st of the month, the ABL Universe announces their Monthly Awards.  The Bombers recognized those players who were bestowed awards in on field ceremonies.

The Thurman Munson League's top batter for June 2013 was Bomber DH, Orlando Bustamante.  The 30 year old terrorized ABL pitching hitting 8 HR's, knocking in 23, scoring 15 more, and hitting .355.  For the season, Bustamante has 25-77-.308 numbers.

The BCL's Top Pitcher Award (AAA) goes to John "Flipper" Martin.  In 6 starts in the Bronx, Martin went 4-0 and a microscopic 1.02 ERA.  Martin was promoted (see below) but finished AAA at 9-3, 1.86 ERA.

July's Top Starting Pitcher in the BOL League (A Ball) was their 4th Round Selection in the 2012 Draft, Reginald Thompson.  Thompson went 5-1 in 7 starts, spanning 43 innings, striking out 37 and compiling a 1.26 ERA.  Before his recall to AA, Thompson finished AA 8-8, 3.12 ERA, and 89 K's in 104 IP.  The future looks bright for Thompson and upper management is very pleased with his progress to date.

May 13th, 2013, Kirby Andrews won the AAA BCL Player of the week award.  Details of his hitting exploit were not available at press time.  But Andrews contract was just purchased by SC and he's earned his promotion.  For AAA, Andrews was raking .273-21-65, scoring 75, and stealing 21 of 24, giving the Bombers some speed off the bench.

On July 19th, John "Flipper" Martin made his ABL debut, hoping to spark the Bombers and maybe get in the chase for a division crown.  Starting on the road vs. Carolina Crush, Martin pitched respectably in the 5-2 loss, going 5.1 IP, giving up 4 H, 3 unearned runs, 1 BB and 7 K.  Martin quoted after the game that his nerves were really jumping in the first and it was pure adrenaline.  But after an easy first, he got a little lackadaisical, giving up a 2 run double to the #9 batter (Justin Wallace) but then it became just me, the catcher (Jayson O'Neill) and the batter and things returned to normal.

On July 20th, AA Pitcher, Brian Young, a 26 year old player, the 70th selection of the inaugural draft tossed a 3 hit shutout vs. Rock River.  Young is finished up AA with a 9-7 record and a 2.87 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 140 ERA plus before his promotion to AAA.  He's kept up the good results with a 1-0 record and a 1.64 ERA in two starts.  It is anticipated that he will finish the season in AAA and based on his performance can expect an invite to Spring Training for a shot at the 5th spot in the rotation.

July 30th, Jeremy Rogers thru a 5 hit shutout against division rival and leader Maple, winning 6-0.  Rogers added just a lone walk and 9 strikeouts in the gem.  One of the South Carolina "Young Guns", Rogers has a 9-4 record since his recall with a 3.20 ERA, good for 8th place in the ERA inside the TML.  He also ranks second in H/9 IP (7.60), 8th place in K/9 IP (6.96), second in Opp Avg (.226), 7th in WHIP (1.21).  The leader in ALL those particular categories is the reigning Cy Young, Maurice Gould, who looks like he'll be winning his second consecutive award as well.

Bombers Welcome Francisco Alfonso

At 10:18p, EDT, Bomber GM Gary Altman approached the podium and started the press conference annoucing the acquisition of Francisco Alfonso from Seattle for LF prospect Noel Patton.

The South Carolina offense has struggled a bit this season, and Alfonso should be an immediate shot in the arm for the Bombers.  Altman along with Manager Tom Ritchie both agreed that Alfonso will be inserted into the cleanup spot in the batting order and be inserted into RF, a spot that he hasn't been asked to play in the ABL, as he primarily DH'ed for Seattle.

In moving Patton, Altman was a little reluctant to move, but ultimately, getting a player of Alfonso's caliber, who has shown he's ABL ready versus a prospect was the right move for the franchise at this point in time.  Another factor that was overcome was the 14 year age difference between the two.

Some questions asked of Ritchie was what will be the roles that Brad Quinn and Robert O'Neill now have with the team.  Ritchies response was that these things often work themselves out.  Altman chimed in saying that both players, for now, will remain with the parent club and Angelo Casas would be sent to the Bronx (AAA) to make room for Alfonso.

When asked if Alfonso would be offered an extension, as he'll be a free agent at the end of the season, Altman said that there he'd open up contract discussions with Alfonso shortly, and would like Alfonso to acquaint himself with all that South Carolina has to offer.

Altman was asked if this now makes the Bombers contenders for the Division.  "Right now our goal is to get to 500 as quickly as possible (20-25 to date).  We're only 6 games behind Maple who has suffered through some injuries themselves.  But the road gets tougher from here as they get one of their better pitchers back in a week or two.  But we feel that our pitching is maturing sooner than we thought, and in the last 3 weeks have brought up Jeremy Rogers (1-1, 2.37 ERA) and Dave Nicholson (one abbreviated start due to weather).  We also have Cecil Gibbons, our 21 year old phenom honing his skills and John Martin at AAA that are just a phone call away if we can remain close.  We don't have to make another trade to get better.  We're aligned just where we thought we should be, and all we need now are the fans to come out and make our ballpark a place where other teams dread playing.

Alfonso, on the all time lists is currently sitting in 3rd place on the ABL HR list (60), and 3rd in RBI's (190).

In other moves, Michael Green was activated from the 14 day DL and demoted to AAA.

Prospect Review

After being ranked 3rd for much of last season, South Carolina sees a slip to #4 overall in the ranking of their Minor League System.

SP - John Martin - #1 ABL Prospect.  22 year old prospect received in the Joe "Crayon" Frost trade and the center piece of the trade with So Cal.  Martin, rates very highly in all rated categories and could probably step into the Bomber rotation right now.  Currently rated at 2.5/4.5*.  GM Gary Altman has not ruled out adding Martin to the roster if the Bombers make a run for the Billy Martin Division Title.  A lot of that decision will need time to decide.
EXPECTED ARRIVAL 2014

CF - Ken Forryan, #16 ABL Prospect.  22 year old, 1st Round Draft Choice is already dealing with some adversity.  Starting out in AA Forryan was facing a demotion to A Ball to get his bat on track as he was hitting .102 with no homers and just 3 RBI's before being placed on the 60 Day DL with a torn back muscle.  His expected return is mid August and projections for Forryan are still very high.  No determination has be made on the level he'll return to.  Currently .5* / 4.5*
EXPECTED ARRIVAL 2016

SP - Steve Walker - 23 years old, 6th Round Draft Choice in the 2012 Amatuer Draft, Walker possesses 4 plus pitches and above average stuff.  Walker suffered a setback with a torn labrum and ending his season.  He's expected to make full recovery and should be cleared in December/January.  For the season was 0-4, 4.54 ERA in 7 games and starts.  He did have 42K's in 35 IP. Currently .5*/3*
EXPECTED ARRIVAL 2016

SP - Roger Marshall - 23 year old, 2nd Round Draft choice in 2012.  Marshall went into the draft as a middle reliever but based on his 15 Stamina was converted to a SP.  Placed in AA ball, the hard throwing lefty needs to trust his stuff more and not be afraid of contact.  Sitting at 0-2 with a 3.32 ERA, the hard throwing lefty (95-97 mph) with a 73% GB rate has walked 31 in 38 innings, and struck out just 16.  Those are the only negative numbers we're seeing.  He's given up just 25 hits and 1 HR, has a WHIP of a more than respectable 1.47 including the walks.  If he gets his control under control, his WHIP, ERA and K's will all move in very positive direction.  Currently 1*/4.5*
EXPECTED ARRIVAL September 2015

SP - Reginald Thompson - 22 year old, 4th Round Draft Choice in 2012.  Thompson has had a tough adjustment to the professional level.  Rated as .5*/4.5* and another pitcher converted after the draft to a SP.  He started in college so he's familiar with the role, just having a tough time controling the walks. 22 BB, 3K's in 25 innings.  Thompson has better ratings across the board than Marshall and needs to trust his stuff.  He went 1-2, 6.12 ERA in AA Ball before heing sent down to Coney Island to "right the ship".  In his only start in A ball, Thompson wwent 6 innings, 4 hits, 1 BB and 2 K's with no runs allowed.  If he can dominate A Ball, he'll be back in AA within 2 months and his career and managements expectations will be rewarded.
EXPECTED ARRIVAL September 2015 or 2016

1B - Bob Vaughn, 23 years old, 18th overall pick from the inaugural draft, Vaughn is starting to find himself.  Last year he had respectable numbers for A ball.  But this year, he's really stepped up his game.  Hitting .291, OB .369, and .496 Slugging in 141 AB's, including 7 homers, Vaughn is really forcing management to look at a AAA promotion for this slugger.  An exceptional glove at first is a bonus, but with Fernandez excelling at the ABL Level, a position change to possibly 3B could be in the cards for Vaughn.  Fact of the matter here is that if he continues to hit like he is now and improve on that, it's going to be real tough to keep Vaughn from reaching the ABL.  Rated 0.5* / 2.5*
EXPECTED ARRIVAL 2015

2B - Rick Grant, 19 years old,  15th overall pick from the inaugural draft, Grant is a gifted defender. Rated 1*/4* he has progressed nicely through the organization to AA right now.  GM Altman is taking a very slow methodical approach to getting Grant ready for the South Carolina.  Grant projects to be a leadoff hitter as he lacks raw power.  As he gets older, and his body matures our scout thinks Grant could reach 15 homers in a season.  There isn't much rush to get Grant to the ABL as a stop gap free agent was signed to bridge the arrival of Grant (Mario Antonio)
EXPECTED ARRIVAL 2015

Other prospects having arrived this season, filling in for injuries that decimated the Bomber infield, including Angelo Casas, and Dan Mullen (just returned to AAA).

Press Conference Scheduled for Saturday Night

Activity is swirling around Bomber Headquarters this afternoon, as it appears a trade has been completed.  All that remains are pending physicals.

The only thing known to this point was that GM Altman had to go to ownership to have this trade signed off on.  A high level executive's only comment was that Altman was grinning ear to ear after leaving the face to face meeting.

The interview room at Bomber Ballpark is being prepped with over 100 chairs set aside for ABL Media, and the season ticket sales team is going to be manning the phones to handle the influx new season ticket orders.

Everyone associated with South Carolina's management team has been usually tight lipped regarding the announcement.  Orlando Bustamante was overheard talking with sophomore ABL'er "Action" Jackson, "I'd love to see the offense improved upon, so me, you and O'Neill start seeing some fat pitches".

Fans, when the news conference was announced, started speculating themselves saying that  starting pitching was the priority, and were hoping that none of the stud arms in AAA were being included in any deal.

With South Carolina 6 games back in the Billy Martin Division following Maple's 6-1 week, a trade of significant magnitude could tighten up the division with 4 months remaining.

The waiting game has begun to see who will be the newest Bomber....and at what cost!

Trade Winds Are Blowing.....

Sources coming out of South Carolina are saying that the Bombers are close to pulling the trigger on a significant trade with a team from the Roberto Clemente League.

When reached for comment, GM Gary Altman refused to confirm this rumor.  Altman did add, "We are constantly looking to improve all facets of our ABL team, as well as the entire organizations.  If there is a player, coach, scout that we feel will improve the franchise, we will explore any and all options to bring that person into our organization."

Altman went onto say that he'd have no specific comment about any particular player or team citing league tampering rules.

An executive with knowledge of the discussions, and wishing to remain anonymous told this reporter that a deal is close to being completed and final details are still being sorted out.  players have been agreed to, and minor issues are being resolved.  It would be adding significant ABL talent to the 25 man roster without removing any talent.  The source also said that the fans will be extremely happy if this acquisition becomes a reality.

2013 Bomber Preview

Season Preview, 2013 South Carolina Bombers

After last season’s debacle and ownership that was more than irate, GM Gary Altman was given a mandate to improve the franchise up and down, starting with the ABL flagship, and the finances of the franchise.  And that’s exactly what Altman did.

6 Rookies made the 25 man roster out of spring training.  This could be a good sign, or a bad sign of things to come.

One of the key pieces, that have been reported previously was the improvement of pitching in the franchise.  One move that was barely touched on was the trade of Joe “Crayon” Frost.  Frost was the first selection in the inaugural draft and while an excellent defender at 2B, a concerted effort was made to convert the gold glove caliber player into a SS.  This transformation was met with resounding effects, and thus led to his subsequent trade to So Cal for the much coveted throughout the ABL John “Flipper” Martin.  This trade also freed up close to $8 million in salary which answered one of the owners mandates coming into the 2013 season.  More on this trade in a future article.

This season has started out tremendously positive for the Bombers so far, and we’ll pick up the preview of this season from 14 games into the season.

Some news of note so far…

The Bombers, with their opening day win was over 500 for the first time in their history.

At the end of the first sim, the Bombers found themselves in 1st place (3-4) for the first time as well.

STARTING PITCHING

A rotation that last year featured Cecil Gibbons, Jeremy Rogers and Dave Nicholson all find themselves developing and honing their craft in the Bronx (AAA).  This year’s rotation has Ed Bell, Aaron Nelson, Sergio Ramirez, Johnny Ratzlaff and Victor Enriquez.

Ed Bell, 39, is coming off Tommy John Surgery.  Last season he was 5-3, with a 4.08 ERA in 14 starts.  Bell was in his free agent year, and just before filing for free agency, came to terms on a 3 year contract with the Bombers.

Aaron Nelson, 25, and currently a 2*/3.5* has the 2nd spot in the rotation.  Nelson started last season in the bullpen, and was moved into the starting rotation and while his numbers were below expectation, he did improve greatly over his reliever stats.  He finished 6-11 5.91.  So far this season, Nelson is 0-2, 9.53 ERA in 3 starts.

Sergio Ramirez, 28 is 1-2 with a 6.62 ERA in 3 games and starts.  He’s averaged almost 6 innings a start, and needs to improve his control or could find himself back at AAA.  Last year, he had good AAA numbers prompting his call up to the ABL where he struggled with a 1-3 record and an ERA of 11.81.

Johnny Ratzlaff – 24 and another San Francisco cast off has shown signs of developing as a potential 5th starter down the road.  Last season with SC Ratzlaff was an abysmal 0-3, 13.71 ERA.  So far this year, 1-2 with a 3.06 ERA, including a stellar performance against the TML’s best team, Boston, going 6.1 IP, with 3 H and 4 K and 0 runs allowed.

Victor Enriquez, 27, is the 5th SP in the rotation and went 6-12 with a 5.51 ERA.  So far in 2013, Enriquez is 01- 4.91 ERA in 11 innings with 10 K’s.  The Bombers are looking for some consistency and innings from Enriquez.

The Bullpen is where the biggest transformation took place in the offseason for the Bombers.  Last year the Bombers were blowing all sorts of games late, and that hurt many things, moral, attendance and overall record.  The Bomber staff was ranked 11th or 12th overall in most pitching categories last season.  This had to change, starting with the bullpen.

Carlton Benson, 38, 3*/3*, pitched in 64 games last season for 98 Inn and had a very respectable WHIP of 1.38 and an ERA of 3.29.

Dorian Dubreuil, 29, 2.5*/2, ROOKIE,  was a Rule V pickup.  Last year in AAA, Dorian went 4-5, 4 Saves, 2.57 ERA and a WHIP of 1.03.  So far Altman looks like a genius as Dorian has pitched in 4 games, 8.2 IP and has given up JUST 1 hit, 2 walks and has 5 K’s.

Kevin Rutledge, 26, 2*/4*. ROOKIE.  worked his way thru AA and AAA last season to make the club out of Spring Training.  He’s struggled a little with his 5.87 ERA, but has an excellent WHIP 1.30 in 7.2 IP.  He’ll be given an opportunity to straighten the ship, which is fully expected for this reliever who can top out at 101 on the radar gun

Mark Thompson, 23, 2*/3.5*, is trying to rebound from last year’s rookie season.  Thompson started out well last year and then stumbled the second half.  This year, he’s started out extremely well, almost better than expected.  He’s 0-1, 1.50 ERA in 7 games, and 6 IP.  A WHIP of 1.17 is very encouraging at this point in time.

Marvin White, 32, 4*/4* was a waiver pickup last season and did extremely well with SC, going 3-1, with 3 saves and a 2.86 ERA in 50 games with the Bombers.  So far this season 1-0, 0.00 and a WHIP of 1.09 in 7.1 IP

Geoff Allen, 33, 3.5/3.5, was very good for SC last season, but he’s even better now.  1-0 with a 3.52 ERA, 0.65 WHIP and 8 K.  Allen could be a major piece of the puzzle bridging the gap between the middle relievers and the back end of the bullpen and is expected to bring a leadership role to the pen based on his age.

Stephen Douglas, 25, 3*/3.5*, ROOKIE,  is the other Rule V draft pick on the Bomber roster this season.  In AA last season Douglas went 7-3, 21 Saves in 68 games, compiling a 1.22 ERA.  Management’s thinking was that Douglas was more than ready to not only be in the ABL but make a contribution to the parent club now.  So far, in 7 appearances, Douglas is 0-0, 4.82 ERA with a WHIP of 1.39.  two bad outings inflated his ERA, but the other key indicators are in line right now.  Altman has toyed with the idea of moving Douglas into the starting rotation because of his workhorse stamina (20).

Bob Robinson, 40, 3.5*/3.5*, CLOSER, was picked up last season off waivers from So Cal (our scout apparently lives and works on the west coast...but I digress, pitched great for South Carolina last year going 2-0, 15 Saves, and a 2.02 ERA.  This season he's picked right up where he left off as he has 3 saves in 4 games, and an ERA of 0.00 and a WHIP of 1.25.  Currently Robinson is on the 14 day DL with a herniated disk, and will resume his closer role upon activation.

CATCHERS

Jayson O’Neill, 26 2*/2*.  Altman thinks that O’Neill is way under rated considering that he had 23 HR and 100 RBI’s last season.  O’Neill was acquired from Kansas City for 1B Prospect Cruz, who was predicted to lead the league in HR’s.  O’Neill started the season on the DL and upon his return last week is hitting 333 with an OPS of 802, which is where he was with KC (741 with SC).  O’Neill is a middle of the order hitter and will be an important piece of the puzzle for SC to compete for the Division.

Carlos Martinez, 29, 0.5*/1*,  won the battle out of spring training for the role as backup to O’Neill.  An average backstop, where not much is expected.  So far this season Martinez is hitting 318 in 22 AB’s with a 966 OPS.

INFIELD

Fernando Guzman, 25, 2.5*/4.5*, ROOKIE..  Last season Guzman was called up in late August and initially he struggled to find himself at the plate, giving concern whether he was ABL ready for 2013.  But then he got hot the last 2 weeks of the season and put up some respectable numbers (5 HR, 18 RBI, .250 in 29 games).  So far this season, his average hasn’t improved much (.244) but his OB is 392.  He has more walks than strikeouts (10-8) and has shown a great eye at the plate.  His defense is stellar and as long as he can be consistent at the plate, he shouldn’t see a return to AAA.

Mario Antonio, 34, 1.5*/1.5* was a free agent acquisition during the offseason.  Antonio should provide a consistent name to be in the lineup (played 122 games last year), and provide stability to the infield with his veteran presence.  He did rack up 40 doubles last season, and in 14 games this year already has 4.  The Bombers would be very pleased with this kind of production from 2B.

Gunner Smart, 28, 2.5*/4*.  Smart is a fan favorite in SC and we’re expecting him to take a step forward this season.  He was placed on the DL the last two weeks of spring training, but was activated in time for Opening Day.  The rust has shown though.  So far he’s hitting .212 with no walks.  However, in 13 games, he does have 2 HR and 7 RBI’s.  Smart needs to improve upon his 64 extra base hits from last year for the Bombers to make some noise in the Billy Martin Division.

Michael Green, 24, 0.5*/1*.  A 2B/SS by trade, and the starting SS last season has seen his job relegated to being a backup.  His limited playing time has also contributed to his .111 batting average.

Dave Collins, 27, .05*/1.5*.  Last year’s starting 2B is this years starting SS.  A super defensive player at 6 of 7 positions makes Collins a very valuable commodity.  His bat needs to get in gear for him to maintain his job as a starter.  He’s hitting a well below expected .137 thru 51 AB’s.

OUTFIELD

Stephen “Action” Jackson, 26, 4.5*/4.5*.  Jackson came into last season as a 3.5* in actual and potential and bumped up both by a full star when the season was over.  Big things are expected of Jackson after his .309, 21 HR, 82 RBI performance.  He had a 391 OB and a 499 SLUG for a 890 OPS in his rookie season.  As well as more BB than K’s in 593 AB’s!  Last year’s performance was parlayed into a 7 year, 27M bargain contract for South Carolina

So far Jackson has started a little slower than expected (244, 3 HR, 10 RBI) but other numbers are better than expected.  Hie’s on pace for 30+HR and over 100 RBI.  Jackson, when he matures and fully develops could very well be an MVP and Triple Crown candidate.

Robert O’Neil, 27 2*/2.5*.  Primarily a LF’er he’s here to be a 4th or 5th OF’er who can provide some power off the bench in a pinch hitting role.  Last season, combined, he hit 22 HR’s in 401 AB (split between AAA and ABL).  Being a left handed hitter, he has the perfect swing for Bomber Ballpark.

Juan Marin, 33, 4*/4*.  Last year Marin’s season was riddled with injuries, limiting him to just 207 AB’s for a player that was expected to be in the middle of the lineup.  He hit 319 with 9 HR, 23 RBI’s.  He had a 383 OB and a 507 SLUG pct.  Multiply those numbers by 3 and you could imagine that the Bombers season could have been better.  It is because of a healthy Marin’s presence in the 2013 edition of the Bombers makes management believe that this season should be a vast improvement over last year.  So far, Marin hasn’t found his stride yet, hitting 225, but he does have a 392 OB.  He also has more BB than K’s (11-7) in 40 AB’s.

Doug Rogers, 25, .5*/1.5*, ROOKIE, Made three stops last year (AA, AAA, ABL) and with the exception of his 20 ABL Abs did admirably.  Was a call up when Marin the Bombers had CF injuries and is more than an adequate 4th or 5th OF’er.  So far in 2013, Rogers is hitting .286, with 1 HR in 32 Abs.

Mike Quinn, 28, 1*/1.5*, ROOKIE. Another rookie on the South Carolina squad who will serve in a support role.  In AAA last season, Quinn hit 287 with a 503 slug in just 143 Abs, with 7 HR.  Power off the bench is never a bad thing, and Quinn is an example of another thumper waiting in the wings for his shot.  So far Quinn is 1-4 with a double and 2 BB;s on the year.

DESIGNATED HITTER

Orlando Bustamante, 30, 4*/4*.  One of the 5 favorite Bomber players and a notorious slow starter in his first two seasons in Bomber Land.  Orlando has improved his defensive prowess, but still lacks some mobility, which relegates him to the DH spot.  Last season, Orlando started off slow, but his end numbers were outstanding, .312, 360 OB, .521 Slug, 29 HR, 81 RBI.  His numbers are a little better to start the season, and good things are expected of him.  Right now Orlando is hitting .241, with 5 HR and 7 RBI in just 14 games.  His RBI total should go up if we can get some people on base for him.

2013 Bomber Draft

This report of the Bomber Blast will focus on the most recent draft the Bombers had and who and why they drafted the players they did.

One of the biggest deficiencies this franchise had was in the pitching category.  A concerted effort was made to bring in quality arms that could be 3 or 4 years away.

Ken Forryan - 22, CF, AA - 1st round selection, 3rd overall.  Projects to be a 5 tool player.  Has tremendous power (18),  excellent speed, potential gold glove defender with an above average arm.  Has a lot of speed and the Bombers are looking for his arrival in late 2015.  One word of note, my scout loves him a lot more than OSA's.  There are big discrepancies between the two scouts, especially in the power category.  If OSA is right, the Bombers have a lead off hitter.

Roger Marshall - 23, SP, AA - 2nd Round selection, who will be utilized as a SP.  Excellent velocity (95-97mph) and a ground ball percentage of 73% should allow the balls that are hit to be playable.  A stamina level of 15 leads management to believe Marshall can remain a starter throughout his career.  Marshall throws sinkers and curves and seems to have movement on every pitch (rating 16).

Hiroaki Ine - 25, CL, AAA - 3rd Round, was the oldest player select in the draft at his selection.  Probably the Bombers most ABL Ready player in the draft, and team officials would not rule out his being placed on the 40 man roster in Sept, if the team remains in playoff contention.  Another fireballer (95-97mph) with a stamina of 20.  Throws a sinker and change up and another pitcher who keeps the ball in the park (73% ground ball pct).

Reginald Thompson - 22, SP, AA - 4th Round, another arm added to the franchise.  Thompson throws a cutter and slider at 95-97mph and has plus ratings in stuff, movement and control (14, 15, 15).  Like Marshall, if the rotation isn't his forte, there is a future in the Bomber bullpen.

David Powell - 22, SP, A - 5th Round.  Excellent velocity, an exceptional curveball and manages to keep the ball in the park (64% GB).  Good stamina as well which sets him up well to for a starting role.  The owner wanted this guy, and damn if we don't do what the owner wants.

Steve Walker - 23, SP, AA - 6th Round.  A true bonafide SP with 4 pitches, good velocity and decent stamina.  With a little development, his pitch quality should increase, his control should increase and can possibly find himself in the Bomber rotation in 2016.

Mark Boyar - 26, MR, AA - 7th Round.  A closer in the making.  Slightly older than some of the other prospects, but is a genuine fireballer. Clocked between 97-99 with above average pitches.  And when contact is made, it's not going to far, as he has a 63% gb pct.  In the Canadian Baseball League, Boyar whiffed 41 in just 28 innings, with a WHIP of 0.93.

Otojiro Yamamoto - 17, RF, A - 8th Round.  No stats to look thru, but possesses tons of power.  Projected as a cleanup hitter, and has time to develop.

Murai Ito - 36, RF, AA - 9th Round.  Probably the oldest player drafted.  ABL Star ratings aren't showing Ito the love, however, based on his contact, gap and power potential, as well as being an average fielder makes this selection a low risk/high reward pick.  He's mature enough to handle the game, hit 16 HR's in 375 AB's which could translate to a 25 HR season.  Plus with his age, he'll probably never get a big pay day through Arbitration.  Ito does have a fiesty side, as he's still serving an 8 game suspension.

Dan Harris - 22, 2B, A - 10th Round.  An above average defender, with average numbers across the board.  Had an outstanding college senior season and Bombers are hoping he can become a defensive specialist that can hit a bit and fill in for brief periods of time.  Harris' speed might be able to secure himself on an ABL roster for a couple of seasons.

Shintaro Rin - 17, LF, A - 11th Round.  The upside here is that Rin, at 17 years old in the Nippon League banged out 23 dingers in 299 AB's and an All Star selection.  The downside is that there is a defensive side of the game that Rin just isn't too interested in.  He's a below average fielder and that more than anything else dropped him in the draft and will probably keep him at A ball for a minimum of two seasons to at least see if he can catch a ball.  If Rin can close the gaps of what he's lacking he could be the steal of the draft for South Carolina.

Hiroya Aoki - 18, SS, A - 12th Round.  Does a lot of things well, some things okay, but nothing really well.  As a middle infielder doesn't field nearly well enough.  No real power to speak of either.  If he can improve a couple of areas of his game, he could rise through the organization and beat the odds, or he could be released.

Next Blog update will be Altman's analysis of the coming season...

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Been a while since the last Bomber Blast, but we're back and ready to start the 2013 season, and there's a lot of optimism in the air.

Coming off a 61-101 season this would seem a tad bizarre, but GM Altman made significant strides in the off season addressing many of the teams needs, specifically the Arm's Race!

The Bombers ranked 11th or 12th in most categories.  So, the first area of improvement is in the bullpen.  The Bombers blew leads late in games last year and that easily cost the South Carolina at least 10 wins.

The first order of business was solidifying the rotation, and while there weren't many affordable SP's available, there was one highly touted arm that we had our eyes on.  Our very own Ed "Dodo" Bell.
Coming off Tommy John surgery this could be risky, but a 3yr / 17.4M contract over 3 years seemed like a perfect match.  The 3rd year is a vesting option should Bell throw 200 IP in 2014, then the final 7.2 M would kick in.  But 2 years should be enough time to bridge the gap for Gibbons to take the helm as the staff ace.

In the Rule V Draft the Bombers plucked CL Stephen Douglas from SD.  Douglas looks to have an amazing future in the ABL.  He went 7-3 w/ 21 Saves and a 1.22 ERA in AA last season.  He threw 81 innings and whiffed 84 with a WHIP of 0.77.  Currently showing as 3 of 4.5* and appears to be ABL ready now.

The next selection in the Rule V Draft was Dorian Dubreuil from Seattle.  Another fine arm.  In AAA Dubreuil went 4-5 w/4 saves, and a 2.57 ERA.  In 98 innings he gave up just 65 hits, struck out 106 and had a WHIP of 1.03

Making the ABL Squad out of spring training is MR Kevin Rutledge.  Rutledge spent last season in AA and AAA compiling some impressive numbers.  2-7 w/ 6 saves.  In 86 2/3 IP, he gave up 71 hits while striking out 88 and a 1.30 WHIP.  Showing as 2/4* this call up might seem premature, but it's tough to keep a 26 year old kid down on the farm who throws anywhere from 99-101!

On December 2nd, the second phase of Altman's transformation of pointing this franchise in the right direction came with the trading of 1st Overall Draft choice, SS Joe Frost.  Frost's value was sky high going into last season but sputtered.  But the Bombers were saddled with financial difficulties by under performing players with significant contracts and a lack of formidable arms in the organization.  So Frost was shipped to So Cal for John "Flipper" Martin (AAA Bronx).  Martin a top prospect in the So Cal organization, as well as in the ABL made this a very attractive deal for the Bombers.  The Bombers were also able to move 4 players with salaries around $8M off the payroll, allowing so financial flexibility.

In January, rookie phenom Stephan "Action" Jackson capped off his superb rookie season by securing a 7 year $27M contract, buying out 2 years of Free Agency at a substantially discounted price.  Right now, Jackson would be eligible for Free Agency at 34 years old!  Fan interest improved immediately upon the signing and South Carolina, is expecting a boost in fans this season.

With the extra cash available to South Carolina, another hole was plugged when 2B Mario Antonio was signed as a FA on a 3 year, 5.3M contract, with the team holding an option on the 3rd year.  Antonio, 34 now, could bridge the gap till phenom 19 year old Rick Grant develops and solidifies the 2B position for maybe a decade.

The final FA signing was a minor league invite to MR David Burns.  If Burns can make the Bombers, he will earn 900K this season.  The crafty 35 year old, while only throwing 89-90 MPH racked up some impressive numbers in AAA last season.  6-1, w/2 saves, a 1.97 ERA and a WHIP of 1.04.  This was all done in 86 2/3 innings while giving up just 57 hits and striking out 85.  Burns is expecting to find a spot in the bullpen about 3 weeks into the season, and the Bombers are hoping things work themselves out to allow this move to happen.

Tomorrow's Blog Posting will focus out the Entry Level Draft.

Aaron Nelson - with the Bomber starting staff in complete disarray back in June, they were scrambling to find arms that could consistently go on out day in and day out, Nelson is starting to find himself.
Coming out of spring training Nelson was relegated to the bullpen where he was on the verge of being sent to AAA.  On June 27th, with an ERA of 8.51 Nelson was moved into the starting staff.  Twice he's broken the 7.00 ERA barrier, but has really started to turn it around.  On August 18th, after suffering a battering by the Maple squad, he saw his record fall to 2-10, and an ERA of 7.52  Since that day he's kicked it up a notch and in 5 starts has a 3-1 record and seen his ERA drop over a run and a half.  6.01 isn't spectacular by any stretch of the imagination, but at 24 years old, he might be finding himself.

The Bombers seem to have some arms with a projection a few years down the road could have a very formidable rotation.  In addition to Nelson, there's Cecil Gibbons (21 years old), Dave Nicholson (24), Jeremy Rogers (25), and in AA 18 year old Emerson Webber.

Now, if we can only find an ABL Ready SP or infielder in the draft....

Welcome Back To Reality - A couple of tough divisional series this segment defined two things.  South Carolina isn't where they need to be, and San Francisco is the creame of the Billy Martin Division (Sorry Maple).

In Game 1 and 3 of the Quake series, the Bombers were 1 hit in each game.  In the openeer of the series, Kirby Andrews broke up the no hit bid by Jeff Williams with 1 out in the 8th.  Final score here is 5-0 Quakes.

In the third game of the series, the Quakes beat SC 2-1.  26 year old Brad Anderson went 7 1/3 no hit innings before lightning struck for a second time.  Kirby Andrews, broke up the no hitter and shutout and chased Anderson when he hit his 13th HR of the season.

Aaron Nelson was the tough luck loser in this one, going 7 IP, 5H and 2 R.  Kieran Simmons 33rd 2-run HR was the game winner.

Kirby Andrews has been quite the surprise for the Bombers this season.  The 29 year old has been forced into a lot of action due to injuries rattling the Bomber OF.  In 105 games, he's hitting 278, 15 HR and 36 RBI.  Kirby also has 14 SB's.

In the middle game against Maple, the Bombers where white washed again, 7-0, behind the Maples Dooley, Villa and Wilder.  Kirby Andrews rapped out a base knock in this game as well.  He had help with a Collins (5th) Triple and a Bustamante (22) Double.

Power Ranking - Well this was a hefty dose of Back To Reality as well.  We're back to sitting at #22, dropping back to 71.0.

Not much more to add after a 2-4 week.  We Bombers will get another chance at both SF and Maple one last time in their final homestand.

Awaiting the draft list to be published and see if we can reload and build upon certain areas.
GM Altman will be exploring the trade market to see where we can pare and improve the overall health of the franchise during the off season.

We welcome you back to the Bomber Blast Report.  Our local cub reporter has been away documenting ballplayers from Transylvania which proved to be a complete waste of time.  But that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

What's happened in the last month or so...Hmmm.

Franchise record 9 game winning streak!  If you've followed the follies of the South Carolina ballclub, it would have thought to have been impossible to have that kind of streak this season. Right now the Bombers have won 10 of 11, and 11 of 13.  All of a sudden the thought of losing 100 games in our inaugural season seems like it can be averted.  A final record of 10-12 would do such.

This streak has also given the Bombers some separation from the Nottingham squad and looks like the Bombers will get no better than the 3rd overall draft pick in the entry draft.  However, that is now in jeopardy as we're just 2 games behind the Jacksonville Jacks squad.  While the #3 overall pick would be better than the #4 pick, we could use all the positive momentum we can garner going into the off season.

Then there is the power rankings.  In August, after losing 12 of 14 games, we saw that not only did our Power Ranking drop from #22 overall - where we've been hovering most of the season to #23 and being passed by Nottingham.  This was a major concern to the GM and Ownership.  The run the Bombers are on now has seen then jump all the way to 19, and if the squad can continue playing good ball, a jump to 15th overall is definitely within reach (currently at 83.0, #15 Greenville is sitting at 86.4).

Team rankings in Batting are starting to come around...ALOT, and this is encouraging to the fans.  The highest ranking for the Bombers are the Bombs!  We rank 2nd in HR's (with 168) and that has won quite a few games for us, as reported in the ABL Dugout with come-from-behind, game winning Grand Slams.  We're 6th in Slugging and 6th in Extra Base Hits.  These stats become important as our Avg (10th) and OB (10th) lag.  This means to us that when we have a runner on first, with our power, he can be considered in scoring position, which makes us a dangerous offensive team.

Pitching is still way behind where we'd like it.  Ranked 11th and 12th in all but one category (K's - 10th), but during this streak, we're seeing very good starting pitching which is accentuated by out back end of the bullpen closing out games.  Waiver pickup Bob Robinson is becoming a fan favorite and he has a 2.25 ERA with 11 saves.

Starting Pitchers Jeremy Rogers, 25 and Mike Joyce, 22 now have .500 records (8-8 and 4-4 respectfully) and this is another in the small steps that lead to bigger things.  Cecil Gibbons, 21 years old, and the SP for the first ever South Carolina Bomber game sits at 6-13.  While some consider this a disappointment, management has stuck by Gibbons and has already named him the Opening Day starter for 2013!  These are the pitchers we're going build around and make this a Championship caliber team.

Finances.  This is a bit of a disappointment to Ownership.  That, and attendance.  We were seeing an average of 20,000 fans coming to games in July and August and having a half empty ballpark, regardless of whether we'd lose money or not was not acceptable.  Seeing fan interest wan to 60 was also disappointing to management.  GM Altman was called in and asked his thoughts, and management was fully behind him.

Ticket prices for the last month were dropped to $17 from $20 and an immediate impact was reported.  Attendance was up 50% to about 30,000 fans.  An increase in gate revenue generated approximately a 20% increase in revenue (400,000 per game - $20 @ 20K, to 510 per game - $17 @ 30K).  The new prices have been in effect for the last 5 home dates, and with 10 home dates remaining, we're expecting to reduce our operating deficit to around 3 Mil.  "This policy will remain in effect until the end of the season", ownership said.

Payroll Paring will take place at the end of the season and the Bombers are expecting to shave off approximately 10 Million to spend on viable free agents in the off season.  Ed Bell's 8 Million contract come off when he files for Free Agency.  Altman says he'd like to keep him, but it will be at a cost significantly less than the 8 million he was last asking  while rehabbing from his Tommy John surgery.

All Star, and Rookie of the Year Candidate in the Thurman Munson League Stephen Jackson continues to excel.  He's been steady all season and has played in 134 of 140 games.  The 25 year old is hitting at a .314 clip with 21 HRs, 72 RBI's and an OPS of 921.  His 45 doubles are amazing and combined with his 21 dingers, has 66 extra base hits.  The best part of this for Bomber Fans is that hes' under team control thru 2017, and management will make him a Bomber for Life.

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

Well, it's been a while since I've had a chance to file a report on the Bombers plight this season.

The last happenings I reported on was after a 1-2 vs Las Vegas, and then a 2-1 series win against Jacksonville.  And then things went down hill in a hurry!

We saw a 0-3 vs Maple, 1-2 vs SF, 2-1 vs Nottingham, 0-3 vs NY, 0-3 vs Dallas, 1-2 vs Ann Arbor and 1-2 vs NJ.  All told South Carolina went a disgusting 5-16, and ownership is peeved.

Here's some news and notes to ponder:
GM Gary Altman has taken a Charlestown Chief's and Reggie Dunlap approach and put a bounty on Eric Swann for the upcoming 2 game set.  This is in retaliation of the brawl that took place on May 27th when Roberto Martinez threw at Orlando Bustamante in the 1st inning.  This happened to be the 2nd brawl the Bombers were involved in in 4 days.  The other being with New Jersey.  Comments after the Maple brawl by GM Altman from the Bomber clubhouse at Maple, "We're not going to be anybody's punching bag.  Just becase we're in last place doesn't mean this club doesn't have heart and we will protect ourselves and each other."

Maple travels to South Carolina on June 18th (the next sim).  Reportedly, but uncofirmed, the league has issued warnings to both Maple and South Carolina.

Ed Bell's season and possibly career is over.  Ed Bell, after contract negotiations for an extension came to an impasse was being shopped around.  In a showcase event in Dallas, Bell partially tore his UCL and now needs Tommy John surgery.  He's expected back in 9 months which will put it at the end of next years spring training, when he's 39.  Bell was quoted as being disappointed and will not go out this way.  South Carolina is still interested in bringing him back, as he was one of a few bright spots on an otherwise dismal pitching staff.

Speaking of the pitching staff, GM Altman now has some pretty big shoes to fill with Bell's absence.  The Bombers rank mostly 11th or 12th in almost every pitching category in the TML and this is unacceptable.  One pitching coach has been fired and other changes could be in the works as well.  Tom Tart, owner of a 9.00 ERA in ABL has been recalled.  Also Victor Enriquez (1-4, 9.35 ERA).  Carlton Benson who was stellar in the bullpen was moved into the rotation to try and shore that up.  That experiment failed miserably so, back to the bullpen he goes.
South Carolina revamped their bullpen as well claiming Bob Robinson, Marvin White off the waiver wire, which is an INSTANT improvement over what was in place on the back end of the pen.  Robinson has been assigned the closers spot and 22 year old rookie, Mark Thompson (1-0, 5 Saves, 3.12 ERA) has been moved to the primary setup position.  Manager Tom Ritchie says that this isn't a demotion in as much as Robinson comes to the Bombers with 4 saves and a 1.86 ERA.

The hitting for the Bombers isn't that bad, and improvement is being made.  The Bombers are 4th in HR's hitting category which shows that they can score runs.  However they're lacking in AVG and OB, which based on those HR's could increase run production.  Steady improvement is being made, but it's slow coming.

To assist with getting better offense, the Bombers called up Mike Murtagh from AAA.  Murtagh was hitting .397, 4 HR and 9 RBI in 58 AB's, showcasing an OB of .485.

The second callup is Mark Buchanan.  This 22 year old rookie will be making his ABL Debut at home, against Maple.  Buchanan started in AA and finished up there with a .300 avg, 1 HR, 8 RBI in 60 AB's compiling a .416 OB to earn his first promotion.  Tom Ritchie has him batting 4th and in RF. No pressure for this kid!

Then in 32 games at AAA to show it was no such fluke, he hit .277, 8 HR's, 19 RBI's and a .347 OB in 112 AB's to punch his ticket to South Carolina.

The third impact hitter brought to the Bomber lineup, who was drafted in the 114th round, 2721 Overall, 28 year old 1B Mark Larson.  Larson started the season in AAA and in 91 AB hit 6 HR's and hit .264 with a .343 OB.
In the 17 games that Larson has played in ABL he's hit .270, with a .313 OB, and 2 HR's in 63 AB's.  While the production from Larson isn't all star quality, it is very serviceable, and we're pleased to have him on the squad.

Next blog update for the Bombers will be next week as I'll be traveling.

Hopefully I'll go 21-0 or something and get back to 500  :-D

DOWN TIME:

With a few days between sims, we had a chance to go over with GM Gary Altman about some of the blossoming talent down on the farm.  He also spoke out for the first time about the firing of the Bombers Pitching Coach as well as head Scout Malcolm Mills.

Francisco Gonzalez, SP, Drafted 90th by the Bombers has dominated AA ball going 4-2 with a 2.54 ERA.  He’s made 8 starts for 46 innings with 40 K’s and a WHIP of 1.33.  At 20 years old, South Carolina management anticipates a move to AAA ball if the trend continues.  Gonzalez is not a scouts dream either, throwing between 87-89 mph and substandard ratings.  When GM Gary Altman was asked about Gonzalez he said, “This is a results oriented business, and right now Gonzalez is putting up results, no matter what anybody thinks about him.  Right now he believes, and he’s making believers of us too!”.  Altman went on to give say, “Every now and again scouts are wrong.  Our scout, Malcolm Mills, who I believe to be one of the best scouts in the business, makes more right choices than wrong ones, and that is evident by where our farm system is ranked in the ABL.”  When pressed for a vote of confidence for Mills, Altman had this to say, “We’ve fired a pitching coach 20 games into the season, so eating a contract does not scare either me or ownership.  It’s what’s in the best interests of winning for our fans.  I don’t relish that aspect of the job, but again, this is a results  oriented business, and ownership wants the ABL trophy.  If Mills can’t get me the information to make a good, sound, informed decision, then South Carolina will be taken in another direction.”

Bobby Bennett, MR, Drafted 100th by the Bombers is now in AAA after being promoted from AA ball.  At 22 years old, he throws in the low 90’s and has a cutter and slider.   He’s been used in multiple spots in the bullpen in his young career.  In AA for Long Island, Bennett was 1-0 with an ERA of 3.18 in 9 games.  He threw 11 1/3 innings, 3 hits and 11 K’s.  His bug-a-boo in AA ball was the walks where he gave 9 passes.

In AAA he’s 1-1 with 1 save, and an ERA of 1.93.  14 innings, 16 hits, and 5 BB’s and 9 K’s.

Altman personally phoned Bennett to tell him of the promotion.  He also made it clear that he’d need more command of his pitches and would have to cut down on his walks.  He’s given up a few more hits, but a few less walks and the strikeouts are down a bit too.  All told, with better competition rises in certain numbers are to be expected, but his ERA trending downward and being used to save a game speaks volumes for this pitcher.  At his age and being in AAA, he’s a strong candidate to make the big club as a player that was drafted 2,385th overall.

Dave White, C, Drafted 118th overall was promoted to AA after only 3 AB’s in A ball.

So far, a very small sample size (14 AB’s) has seen White rake out 8 hits, and knock in 4.

Not really a scout’s dream with limited as he’s lacking in every rating category is proving the neigh-sayers wrong, so far.

2 Steps Forward, 1 Step Back

500 HERE WE COME
The Bombers assault on reaching 500 took a step back seeing them go 0-3 vs Kansas City and 1-2 vs Las Vegas.  South Carolina is now sitting at 18-28 with a road trip to Jacksonville and Maple coming up.

ED BELL

Contract negotiations with the superstar starter appear to have stalled.  Ed Bell has a record of 4-2 in 10 starts, with an ERA of 4.21.  San Diego, Ann Arbor and Dallas have been linked as suitable dance partners for a trade.

ACQUISITIONS

Two players were signed to minor league contracts.  CF'er Greg Willis and 1B Emilio Costello (no relation to Lou Costello).
Willis will report to Coney Island (A Ball), and Costello, a 1Bman by trade will see action at his native position, CF, and in his hometown, for the Bronx Bombers (AAA).
Costello was originally drafted by Cabo San Lucas in the 122nd Round and was released on April 23rd.
In limited action this season, Costello was 2 for 7 in A ball, and 1 for 3 in AAA.

CENTERFIELD

The Doug Rogers trial was a epic failure.  Rogers hit .150 (3 for 20) with 1 RBI.  Not that production was overly important because the defense was there, but cleary Rogers was not ready to make a two level jump.

Robert O'Neil will be called up and has been added to the 40 man roster.  O'Neil was tearing up AAA hitting .326 with 11 taters and 30 RBI's.  O'Neil looks like he'll be the final CF'er for the Bombers until the return in mid August of Juan Marin, who was having a tremendous season.

500 HERE WE COME

The Bombers assault on reaching 500 took a very positive step forward going 2-1 vs Jersey, and then 3-1 against Cabo San Lucas.  The Bombers are sitting at 17-23, and have gone 12-8 since firing their pitching coach at 5-15.

FAN INTEREST & ATTENDANCE
Fan interest is at 64 and has held steady there.  Looking to have a few promotional days to see if we can perk that up somewhat.

Attendance over last year (which didn't exist and is befuddling) is down 2.3%.  To turn that around for the remainder of this homestand, $2 off every ticket sold.  The goal this year is 3,000,000 fans, and we're on pace to achieve that (3.2 million) but management would be ecstatic to push the 4 Million mark, which could allow GM Altman to persue a high end free agent to help guide the youngsters to the promised land.

7 games remain on this 14 game homestand and we’ll be hosting Kansas City for 3, and then 4 against the first place Las Vegas Jokers before hitting the road for a 5 hour bus ride to Jacksonville to start a short 7 game road trip.

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH FOUND
Bob Hamlyn, C, who at 37 years old hit homers in 3 consecutive games, in the series win against the Jersey Jesters.

OUCH!!!!
Star Bomber CF'er Juan Marin, is out for 3 months with a broken leg suffered making a defensive play. He was placed on the 60 day DL, freeing up a coveted roster spot for Doug Rogers, 24, called up from AA Long Island to patrol CF for the Bombers.  Altman says that the selection was because there was no native CF'er playing in AAA and Rogers offers some speed as well to create havoc on the base paths.  Manager Ritchie plans to play the kid everyday in CF and has him penciled into 9th in the order, moving SS Michael Green to 8th in the order.

In 36 games, Rogers was hitting .276 with 2 HR, 23 RBI's and 5 SB's.  He's made zero errors for the Ducks and has 2 assists

TRANSACTIONS:
Victor Enriquez and Tom Tart were both demoted to AAA, and

Glen Slaughter and Dave Nicholson were promoted.  Slaughter gives the Bombers a left-handed arm in the bullpen.

Enriquez, in his last start for the Bombers went 1.1 IP giving up 7 runs (6 earned) on 5 hits and 1 BB.

CONTRACTS
No word on the Ed Bell negotiations to report at this time.  Rumors from an anonymous source high up in the South Carolina front office says that a trade of Bell if negotiations fall apart could occur sooner than the trade deadline.  When this reporter brought this to Altman for confirmation, Altman simply stated that, "Ed Bell is an intregal part of this franchise both now and for the future and we'd love nothing more for him to finish his ABL career with the Bombers.  Not to put the cart before the horse, but we'd love to have him remain with our organization when he decides to hang up his spikes."

Dallas is rumored to be looking for Major League talent and Bell would be a great fit there.

Off and Running

Well here we are, the very first blog about the South Carolina Bombers organization.

Ownership has given his expectations to General Manager Gary Altman, but Altman has higher expectations and is not afraid to act in the franchise's best interests.

GOING, GOING, GONE!
After a 5-15 start, and 20 games into the Inaugural ABL Season, pitching coach Luis Gonzalez was relieved of his duties and fired.  Since that point in time, the Bombers have responded well to manager Tom Ritchie by going a modest 7-6

WELCOME TO THE SHOW!
Bombers 1st Round Draft choice, #3 overall and the #3 Prospect in the ABL, Joe Frost, in his 1st ABL AB hit a homerun off Minnesota's Arturo Ruiz on 4/30 in the 1st inning!

HITTER OF THE WEEK!
Bombers Marín TML Hitter of the Week
Monday, May 7th, 2012: At the age of 32, Juan Marín might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The South Carolina center fielder put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .441 batting average. For his efforts Marín collected the Thurman Munson League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 15 hits in 34 at-bats, 4 home runs and 8 RBIs last week in 7 games.

Marín is hitting .316 this year with 7 home runs, 16 RBIs and 24 runs scored. He has 42 hits in 133 AB, 13 walks and a .383 on-base percentage.

ROOKIE OF THE MONTH!
Stephen Jackson was named the very first Rookie of the Month in the Thurman Munson League in ABL History for April 2012 by hitting .382, 5 HRm, 18 RBI and 16 RS.

RUMOR HAS IT...
Ed Bell, 38, is secretly in negotiations to extend his contract and remain with the Bombers for the remainder of his career.  His experience and leadership qualities are just what the young Baby Bombers need in maturing into a juggernaut in the ABL.  Currently, Bell is 3-1 with a 3.54 ERA
